End the Partisan Delays

The following letter to the editor has been sent to papers across the United States.

Dear Editor:

At a moment when we all recognize the existence of an emergency, threatening both our health and our economy, I would like to think that we would all pull together.  Unfortunately, when it came to the emergency legislation just passed by Congress, what we saw was another example of “never let an emergency go to waste” and raw partisanship.

Democrats, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, used their delaying power to call for adding a laundry list of their leftist agenda, on measures unrelated to the coronavirus.  The Green New Deal, diversity, student loan write-offs, minimum wage, easier fraudulent voter registration, and even funding Planned Parenthood were among their demands.  So outrageous were these demands that even Pelosi finally dropped most of her wish list.

Imagine if the Republicans had tried to include full funding for a border wall, pro-life measures, or weakening the restrictions on energy production.  The leftist media and politicians would have screamed to high heaven against “exploiting the crisis”.  That works both ways.

The bill has passed, but it is probably not the end of the story.  Follow-up legislation will likely be required soon.  Let’s hope that next time we will see good-faith cooperation and expedited action.

Sincerely,

Peter J. Thomas
