Dear editor:
The budget proposed by President Trump lays out a first step toward restoring a Constitutional budget for the United States. The President calls for giving priority to those programs that are authorized by the Constitution, such as defense and homeland security, while cutting back on many domestic programs that have no legitimate basis in the powers delegated by the Constitution.
Now it is time for Congress to do its job. Congress should stay within the general constitutional outlines of the Trump budget, while checking to see if it may need adjustments in the details. Furthermore, since even the President’s budget only begins to remove the unconstitutional spending, Congress should seriously consider speeding up the process.
The President has done his part. Now we will see if Congress will respond in good faith.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Thomas
