The following letter to the editor was sent to newspapers around the U.S.
Dear Editor:
It’s a shame that the opponents of the President have chosen to exploit the coronavirus for political purposes. They have criticized the President for failing to act like a lawless American fuehrer (“lock us up” was the demand of liberal columnist Dana Milbank) and they have criticized him when he acted within his legal authority, as when he imposed travel restrictions. The media have tried to whip up a panic, making us feel like we are all going to die.
This public health challenge can best be handled by the traditional methods of our society. The public should listen to health care professionals, not politicians or politically-motivated media. Our decentralized system allows governments at all levels and private organizations to make the decisions best for them, instead of imposing a nationwide one-size-fits-all approach.
Instead of second-guessing our political leaders, each of us should stay calm and take the common-sense measures that will allow us to slow the spread of the virus. That will be of more value than all the panic-mongering of the politicians and media.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Thomas
