Is any American above the law? According to the rhetoric in Washington today, anyone who runs for president (or at least anyone who runs for president as a Democrat) and all of his family members are thereby immunized from investigation for any crime, and especially from investigations regarding corruption.
Concern over the very real possibility that Hunter Biden was trading on his father’s name and influence to enrich himself have been published even in the very liberal New York Times and The New Yorker. Many other liberals have left no doubt that this whole matter looked quite improper to them, and have speculated on whether the scandal might hurt Biden’s election chances. It is beyond doubt that Hunter Biden received some very lucrative positions for which he had no obvious skill or talent – just his relationship to the Vice President.
Yet, the Left now declares the whole issue of corruption off-limits because Joe Biden is a candidate for president.
No such objections were raised within the Obama administration when it opened an investigation into presidential candidate Donald Trump – an investigation based on the flimsiest of information, provided partly by an opposing candidate and partly by a foreign government. Even when the partisan Steele Report could not be verified, and even when one of the investigators admitted that he did not expect further investigation to lead to uncovering any crime, the investigation continued.
The President is required by the Constitution to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed”. There is no exception for any sort of political candidate. If the president has a possible crime called to his attention, he has a responsibility to have it investigated. That investigation may find that no crime was committed – as happened with the three-year attempt to find illegal collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia – but discovering the truth, whatever it may be, is the purpose of investigating. Only after a full effort to obtain the facts can a conclusion as to the truth be drawn.
Truth seems to be the furthest thing from the minds of those who shout about a “Ukraine scandal” involving the President. Their real purposes are to protect Joe Biden and to smear President Trump. Politics, not the Constitution and the law, is the foundation of this controversy.
