TCC Chairman Peter J. Thomas sent this letter to the editor to newspapers around the country.
Dear Editor:
Our constitutional system has been tested by the coronavirus, which some thought could only be handled by a highly authoritarian and centralized approach. Fortunately, our system has worked as well as the Founders hoped it would.
Anyone who doubts our success need only look at what has happened in Europe. As of late last week, the death rate compared to the U.S. was about twice as high in the Netherlands and the U.K., about two and one-half times as high in France, three and one-half times in Italy, and about four times in Spain and Belgium. In contrast, wild predictions about overwhelmed hospitals and hundreds of thousands of deaths in our own country have been abandoned.
President Trump ignored those on the left who demanded that he treat this as a Reichstag Fire moment, seizing dictatorial power to deal with the emergency. Instead, our decentralized federal system has worked as intended, with state and local governments making the arrangements they deem most appropriate, instead of a one-size-fits-all solution for the entire country.
The Federal government has played an important role in assisting the states, and the Trump administration has even been praised by the Democratic governors of New York and California.
We can all be grateful that we have been saved from the high death rates now plaguing so much of Europe. We will have a special reason for celebrating Constitution Day later this year, praising the work of the men whose wisdom made this possible.
Sincerely,
Peter J. Thomas
Chairman
