Peter J. Thomas, Chairman of The Conservative Caucus, praised President Trump for being careful to act within the law when Congress failed to reach agreement on another coronavirus relief bill.
“In contrast to President Obama, whose boast of having ‘a pen and a phone’ was a claim to be above the law and the Constitution, President Trump has limited himself to working within the limits of the laws already on the books while dealing with the emergency” said Thomas.
Thomas pointed out that Trump based his actions not on inherent presidential authority, but on such statutes as the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, and the Omnibus Budget and Reconciliation Act of 1993.
“Compare this to Obama”, said Thomas, “who exempted most illegal aliens from enforcement of the law, handed out green cards in clear violation of the law, and attempted to appoint executive branch employees without Senate approval. Fortunately, the Federal Courts often intervened to block Obama’s lawless actions.”
